Cyber Security vs Network Security: Know the difference
Every new technology or software invented goes under this question “Is it secure?” That’s how security is always considered an important feature in the digital era. But do we understand them clearly?
Over time security is classified further into cloud security, network security, cyber security, etc… Have you ever thought about the difference between them?
If so, here in this article you will get to know about the difference between Cyber Security and Network Security. Before getting into the topic let’s first understand the term Information security.
What is Information Security?
The security under the technical or digital sense is called information security. As the business and technology, vulnerabilities also increased. Information security deals with the process, techniques to protect the data or information of a business or person.
It is shortly called InfoSec, it protects both physical and digital data from unauthorized access, use, and disclosure or modification. It is the foundation of data security the words cyber security and network security both are covered under the term information security. They both are part of information security.
What is Cyber Security?
The word Cyber denotes anything that is in relationship with, computer, internet, or information technology. Cyber Security covers the techniques, methods, rules, ongoing practices that should be adopted to secure a computer, or device that is connected to the internet from any possible loss of information.
Tools used in cyber security
- PKI Services
- Managed Detection and Response Service (MDR)
- Penetration Testing
- Staff Training
- Firewalls
- Antivirus Software
In short, Cyber security deals with the techniques and methods to deal with cyber attacks. Cyber attacks are done through an existing vulnerability in the system to attain or access or take control of any sensitive information of the system.
What is Network Security?
The word Network itself in a general sense refers to a group of interconnected things. Network security deals with the techniques to protect a network of computers that are interconnected through the Internet or LAN from any possible cyber attacks.
Thus, Network Security is the subset of Cyber Security. Network security focuses mainly on protecting any information or transaction between the networks (computers). Every organization that transfers large data will have a Network solution to protect itself from Cyber Attacks.
Tools used in network Security
- Firewalls
- Anti-virus software
- Intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS)
- Virtual private networks (VPN)
Comparison: Cyber Security vs Network Security
From the above explanation that Cyber Security and Network Security are interrelated. However all the Cyber Security measures are not covered under Network Security, here are some notable differences between Cyber Security and Network Security.
PARAMETER | CYBER SECURITY | NETWORK SECURITY |
Purpose | It aims to protect the data residing in the device or servers. | It protects the flowing data between the connected devices or servers. |
Part of | It is a part of the Information Security | It is a part of the Cyber security |
Use | It protects anything in the Cyberspace | It protects everything in the Network Space |
Protection against | It deals with cyberattacks like phishing, zero-day, etc…
It deals with Cybercrimes and Cyber frauds. | It protects the network against DOS attacks.
It protects against the trojan ( that’s a virus in impersonated as normal software) |
Attacks that are included | It includes all types of cyber attacks and network attacks like phishing and pre-texting | It includes viruses and worms. |
Mode of data | It protects against stored and resting data. | Whereas network security deals with the data in transactions through network terminals. |
Professionals duty | The cyber security professionals or experts underrate the protection, detection, and recovery of cyber data. | The professional focus only on the IT Infrastructure of the organization. |
Types of Data | Cyber security applies to network protection, applications, and other up-to-date information available under cyber securities. | Network Security secures sensitive data like passwords, internet access, firewalls, backup, encryption, etc…
